Ask who? That's me, Donna, the creator of this site. I'm no expert, but after years of research I can answer a lot of questions about Gene Kelly. Presented on this page are the "frequently asked questions" since this site began in 1996. If you have a question for me, please send an email. The frequent, unusual, or interesting questions will show up here!
In what movie did Gene....
dance on roller skates? - It's Always Fair Weather
dance around a building under construction? - Living in a Big Way
dance with the cartoon? - Anchors Aweigh with Jerry Mouse and also in Invitation to the Dance
dance with himself? - Cover Girl
dance in the rain? - Just kidding! Everyone knows that one!
How did Gene Kelly die? Where is he buried?
Gene died on February 2, 1996 after complications from a series of strokes. He was cremated.
How tall was Gene Kelly?
According to published reports, Gene was about 5'9". But, according to family members and those who knew him, he was probably closer to 5'7" or 5'8".
Where did he get that cute scar?
From the biography by Clive Hirschhorn:
"As a child he was singularly accident-prone, and at the age of six, while riding a tricycle without handlebars on Mellon Street [Pittsburgh, PA], he lurched forward on to an exposed piece of cast iron. The metal went through his cheek, causing a deep gash which bled profusely. Mrs. Kelly was out at the time, and a neighbour, hearing him cry, rushed him home, and as his wound continued to pour blood into the kitchen sink over which he was perched, she called the family doctor who stitched him up. To this day he still carries the evidence of the accident in the shape of a small, half-moon scar on the right [sic] side of his face. When he first arrived in Hollywood in 1941, certain studio photographers touched up the scar, but Gene himself never bothered to conceal it in any of his films, and it has become an acceptable part of his appearance." Actually, the very acceptable scar is on the left side of his face.
When is Gene's autobiography coming out?
At the time of Gene's death, his autobiography was unfinished. Rumor has it that his wife, Patricia Ward Kelly, will complete and publish it. If and when I know more details, I'll post them on the main page. The latest rumor is Fall 2001, but I have yet to see evidence of that.
What are Gene's children doing now?
Oldest daughter Kerry is a psychologist. Daughter Bridget works as a costume designer. Son Tim also works in the film industry (sorry, gals, he's married!).
Where can I get more info? or "Send me more info"
In the words of Jerry Mulligan, "who could ask for anything more?" Seriously, if you want to know something specific, please ask me. Otherwise, almost everything I know is found within these pages!
More questions and answers will be posted soon!
