Gene on Television
Gene Kelly is best known as "just a mo-vie actor" (as Don Lockwood would say). However, he did have numerous appearances on the small screen as well.

Gene's Series or Specials
Going My Way
- aired on ABC, Wednesdays 8:30 - 9:30 from October 3, 1962 to September 11, 1963
Gene's ONLY venture into series television! Based on the popular 1944 movie of the same name, Gene takes over Bing Crosby's role as Father Chuck O'Malley, a Catholic priest stationed at St. Dominic's in New York City. Episodes focus on Fr. Chuck's escapades with parishoners as well as his elderly pastor, Father Fitzgibbons (Leo Carroll). Dick York also stars as Fr. Chuck's friend Tom Colwell, the director of the neighborhood youth center.
The series was enjoyable, good-natured fun. Network and church censors made the plot-lines somewhat limited, but the show portrayed a simple charm, and it's especially fun if you're Catholic. Pitted against the extremely popular The Beverly Hillbillies, this show didn't stand a chance.
Episodes included: "Back to Ballymora," "Keep an Eye on Santa," "Mr. Second Chance," "My Son, the Social Worker," "Florence, Come Home," "The Boss of the Ward," "Reformation of Willie," "A Tough Act to Follow," "Has Anyone Here Seen Eddie?," "Saint for Mama," and "Blessed are the Meek."
The Life You Save
- aired on Schlitz Playhouse of Stars on March 1, 1957
Gene's dramatic television debut was in this adaption of Flannery O'Connor's famous short story. The author criticized the choice of Kelly for the role of the one-armed Southern drifter, doubting that a song-and-dance man could be convincing. After seeing his performance, she recanted! Note that O'Connor's original ending was changed for television. Also starred Agnes Moorehead.
Dancing: A Man's Game
- aired on NBC, Omnibus, December 21, 1958
In this segment of the Omnibus series, Gene lets his dancing secret out...dancing is simply
an extension of athletic movements. Athletes such as Dick Button and Mickey Mantle are called on to demonstrate their "moves," and to dance. This is not available on video, however, if you visit New York City or Los Angeles you can view it at the Museum of Television and Radio.
Pontiac Star Parade
- aired on NBC, 8:30 - 9:30, Saturday, November 21, 1959

The Kennedy Center Honors
- aired December 27, 1983
Gene is honored in this production of the fifth annual Kennedy Center Honors. It's a heart-wrenching tribute, but it's a joy to see Gene so happy as he realizes how much he means to so many people.
Reflections on the Silver Screen
- first aired on February 2, 1994
Gene talks candidly with AMC host Richard Brown about his career. Many clips are interspersed with Gene's comments. This special is shown frequently on AMC.
A & E Biography
- first aired February 3, 1996
A & E failed to produce a biography about Gene until after his death. Several of the factual errors that appeared on the first broadcast were later corrected. Despite the absence of interviews with family members, this documentary is fun. The most enjoyable film clip is that of a home movie of Gene and brother Fred performing on the vaudeville circuit, and the most heart-wrenching clip is news footage of Gene as fire destroys
his home in 1983. At this time it is not available on video, but contact the A & E Biography web page.
