Music
Recently Gene Kelly fans and fans of movie musicals in general have been delighted by the remastered soundtrack releases by Turner and Rhino Records . Each CD contains the complete score remastered from the original recordings. In addition, the CDs contain multi-page booklets filled with photos and behind the scenes information on each film. There are even some outtakes that were not included in the original films! One word of caution is that the familiar taps are NOT included, which makes the music enjoyable except in songs like “Moses Supposes” where the taps ARE the music!

The following CDs have been released so far:

Gene CD Gene Kelly at MGM: 'Swonderful!

Included in this CD are 18 tracks and a 28-page booklet. Songs not found elsewhere include “The Babbit and the Bromide,” “The Worry Song,” and “Fido and Me.” Available from Amazon.com.

For Me and My Gal For Me and My Gal

There isn't too much Gene on this CD, but it is great for the 28-page booklet, the spirit of vaudeville music, Judy Garland, and the wonderful rendition of “Ballin' the Jack.” Available from Amazon.com.

Singin' CD Singin' in the Rain

This CD is dedicated to Gene Kelly's memory as “our lucky star.” It includes a wonderful 28-page booklet. As for the music itself, there are great instrumentals from the score, including the music played during the silent films. Special tracks feature Gene's rendition of “All I Do is Dream of You” that was cut from the film, and a hysterical “tempo track” of Gene showing Jimmy Thompson how to perform “Beautiful Girl.” Did anyone else notice one of the tracks is titled “Gene Dreams of Kathy”? What about Don Dreams of Kathy or Gene Dreams of Debbie? Available from Amazon.com.

Brigadoon Brigadoon

Brigadoon includes a 20-page booklet and the outtakes of “From This Day On” and “There But For You Go I” in addition to the fine score. Available from Amazon.com.

American in Paris An American in Paris

A DOUBLE CD with a 44-page booklet! Many outtakes are included in this collection, including much of the excellent Gershwin music used as background music throughout the film. Highlights include Gene's rendition of “I've Got a Crush on You” (cut from the film), Levant's “Concerto in F” and the background music from when Jerry and Lise first meet. Available from Amazon.com.

Rhino also has a CD for Ziegfeld Follies, which is great. But, if you are only looking for Gene, you can get “The Babbit and the Bromide” from the 'Swonderful CD. If you are interested in the other songs, it is available from Amazon.com
Cover Girl CD Cover Girl

This CD also includes the soundtrack to another Rita Hayworth musical, You Were Never Lovlier (with Fred Astaire). The quality is poor, but it's nice to have. It's available from Amazon.com
